GP unable to connect with database engine

it can occur if the you rename SQL instance name, provided while installing Dynamics GP, if it is the case follow these line.

for windows Server 2008R2

windows folder>>>sysWOW64>>>odbcad32.exe>>>system DSN

double click Dynamics GP and provide sql server name you want to connect and press next until you finished the wizard. 

Restart GP and enjoy :)
